Where Fire and Rescue Rule

If you are interested in a career in fire and rescue or looking to improve some of your skills, then you should check out the training opportunities at the Brown Emergency Training Center (BETC) at Cleveland Community College. There are lots of reasons why BETC continues to have record-breaking enrollments in the majority of the programs it offers and is known as one of the top fire and rescue centers in North and South Carolina.

Here are a few of the training opportunities:

Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Simulator

The 12-passenger airplane represents the size of aircraft usually at regional airports. With this tool, realistic crash conditions can be created with fire, smoke and all the difficulties of removing injured passengers and crew at a crash site.

The simulator can be configured differently to provide demonstrations of numerous emergency conditions. It can be used for training in fire and rescue, survival school, industrial brigade, and as supplemental training to other live fire exercises. It is also mobile so training can occur at BETC or a location near you.

Flashover Simulator

This is another mobile simulator that can be brought to your location or used onsite at BETC. The Flashover Simulator allows you to observe fire behavior and the events that lead up to a flashover phenomenon, and you can create the simulations over and over until your department is confident in dealing with a flashover situation.

As with the aircraft simulator, the flashover simulator can be used for training in fire and rescue, survival school, industrial brigade, and as supplemental training to other live fire exercises.

Firefighter Training Academy

This is an intense nine-week training program to prepare individuals to become firefighters working in a municipal fire department. Participants receive 400 hours of instruction and become certified in Firefighter I and II upon completion of the program. Instruction covers hazardous materials, rapid intervention team training, live fire scenarios, and physical training. In addition, participants attend workshops in résumé writing and interviewing, and hear from area fire chiefs what they look for in hiring new firefighters.

Fire and Rescue College
